These are the details I recall from the profile I saw in October 2025. They describe what was presented to me at the time. I cannot confirm whether he currently uses Hinge or what any current profile says.

Ken, Kendal, and the location

Only after we started talking did I learn that Ken was actually Kendal, and that he lived in Newport, Washington, not Coeur d’Alene.

He explained that Kendal was unusual enough that there was basically only one of him, so using his real name made him easy to find. Coeur d’Alene, he said, was close enough without making him quite so easy to locate.

At the time, I didn’t find that strange. I actually thought it was pretty smart.

The profile prompts

The way to win him over was to “be spontaneous and fun.”

He could “build or fix anything.”

And dating him was like “hitting triple 7s on a slot machine.”

What I noticed

There were pictures of a pool, a house, friends, a truck, and a dog.

The photo I liked on Hinge.

But the one that got me was the dog.

So I pressed the heart.

The first messages

At 6:53 on Halloween morning, we matched.

Well howdy 😍

I didn’t respond.

Not because I was playing hard to get. I genuinely wasn’t sure whether I should.

There was a meaningful distinction, at least in my mind, between deciding a stranger looked interesting enough to press a heart and deciding he was worth the time and effort of actually getting to know.

He was still just some random guy on Hinge.

My mom did not share my hesitation. She thought I should respond. In fact, she insisted on it for the next two days.

Eventually, I gave in. What was the risk in saying hello?

Hello :) how’s your Sunday going

That was it.

Nothing dramatic. Just one ordinary message to a man I had never met. I could not have known then what I was saying yes to.

The conversation that drew me in

I didn’t hear from him for two days.

When he finally responded, he apologized for taking so long. He explained that he hadn’t been spending much time on his phone because his parents were in town.

By then, we had exchanged enough messages for me to feel comfortable asking the obvious question.

Did you tell them about me??

I followed it almost immediately with:

Just kidding lol.

I still didn’t know him well enough to trust that he would understand my sense of humor.

He did.

Better yet, he played along.

Everyone knows about you. Youre basically all we talk about. Hope you got your nap. Should we just exchange numbers? My whole family wants a video call with u

A family video call? Too slow. Maybe we should just exchange addresses instead

I’ll swing by and meet everyone in person.
Hope they like casserole

Lol that made my night. I love it!
Youre quick 😍🌹

That exchange gave me the first glimpse of what would quickly become one of my favorite things about him.

He didn’t just understand my sense of humor. He knew how to add to it.
